About NMDC Limited

NMDC Limited, incorporated in 1958, is a Government of India public sector mining company under the Ministry of Steel and India’s largest iron ore producer. Its principal operations are large mechanised mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka.

The company’s core earnings come from producing and selling iron ore to steelmakers. NMDC also has exposure to diamonds, pellets, renewable power and mineral exploration. NMDC Steel Limited is a separate listed company after the demerger of the steel undertaking.

Investor monitorables include production and sales volume, iron ore price revisions, EBITDA per tonne, mining and freight costs, environmental approvals, capital expenditure, cash balances, dividends and progress on capacity expansion.

Business segments and operating focus

The iron ore segment contributes the majority of revenue and profit. Other activities are smaller but strategically relevant, including the Panna diamond mine, pellet-related operations, wind power and domestic or overseas mineral exploration.

Business Model and Business Segments

NMDC extracts iron ore from captive mining leases, processes it into calibrated lump ore and fines, and sells these products mainly to domestic steel producers. Earnings are driven by tonnes produced and sold, realised price per tonne and the cost of mining, beneficiation, royalty, freight and logistics.

Major operating areas include Bailadila iron ore mines in Chhattisgarh and the Donimalai and Kumaraswamy mines in Karnataka. Other business interests include diamonds, pellets, renewable energy and mineral exploration.

The model can generate strong cash flows during favourable iron ore cycles, but profitability can fluctuate with commodity prices, steel demand, regulation, weather, transportation constraints and production interruptions.

What does NMDC do and how does it earn revenue?

It also has interests in diamonds, pellets, renewable power and mineral exploration. Revenue and profit are therefore influenced by iron ore production, sales volumes, realised prices and operating costs.

Is NMDC a government company?

Yes. NMDC is a public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. The Government remains the promoter. Investors should verify the latest promoter holding from exchange-filed shareholding patterns.

Why does the NMDC share price move with iron ore prices?

Iron ore is NMDC’s principal product. Changes in domestic steel demand, benchmark ore prices, NMDC’s price revisions, export conditions and mining costs can affect revenue expectations and therefore the share price.

What should investors monitor in NMDC quarterly results?

Key monitorables include iron ore production and sales volume, average selling price, EBITDA per tonne, operating margin, royalty and logistics costs, capital expenditure, cash balance, receivables and dividend announcements.

Does NMDC pay dividends?
